Accidents and unexpected illnesses can happen to anyone. If you are temporarily uninsured and need immediate coverage, Blue Transitions, a short-term/travel health insurance plan from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM), may be right for you. This plan allows you to choose from 3 deductible levels and coverage periods of 1–11 months.

Blue Transitions is short-term health insurance designed to fit your budget while providing peace of mind that you are receiving reliable health care coverage and protection from unexpected accidents or illnesses. Some common health care expenses covered with this plan include:

  • Inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and hospital services
  • Diagnostic services
  • Emergency care
  • Office visits (excludes wellness/preventive care visits)
  • Limited prescription drug coverage
  • Physical, occupation and speech therapy
  • Coverage when you travel, including the unique BlueCard® program
  • 24/7 Nurseline

Blue Transitions may be your short-term health insurance solution if you are:

  • Between jobs, or working a seasonal or part-time job
  • Waiting for your employer's health insurance coverage to take effect
  • A recent college graduate or a dependent reaching the maximum age limit under your parent's plan and needing affordable coverage until you can obtain other BCBSNM coverage

You are eligible for Blue Transitions short-term/travel health insurance if you are:

  • A U.S. citizen or a permanent resident living in the U.S. at least two years
  • At least 60 days old or under 65 years old
  • Not currently pregnant or an expectant father
  • Not anticipating adding newborns to the policy
  • An unmarried dependent child at least 60 days old or under 25 years old
  • Not on Medicare or Medicaid

Health insurance costs include monthly payments, individual deductibles, drug coverage deductibles, out-of-pocket expenses, copayments, and coinsurance. For Blue Transitions short-term/travel health insurance plan, here’s what you can expect:

  • Individual deductibles ranging from $500 to $2000; each member individually must meet the deductible. Customize your plan by choosing a deductible amount that works best for your situation. To see what your monthly payments would be, get a quick quote.
  • Out of pocket coinsurance limits are $2000 for individual and $5000 per family
  • All covered services are paid at 100 percent once your coinsurance limit is reached (excluding prescription drugs, other items covered under the drug plan)

  • Once you have met the plan deductible, Blue Transitions covers 70 percent of covered charges—you pay the remaining 30 percent (coinsurance)

  • Approval of any re-application for Blue Transitions coverage starts the beginning of a new benefit period.
  • You may terminate a policy before the end of its benefit period.
  • Any condition which may have occurred under the prior policy(s) is a pre-existing condition not covered under the subsequent policy.
  • If you need a long-term health insurance solution, please consider our other individual and family coverage options

Every insurance plan has limitations. These limits are there to keep health care costs down for everyone. Below are a few examples of limits with this plan. You should review your Blue Transitions Benefits Booklet for a full list of limits and exclusions.

  • Age Limit for Children: Children are covered only through age 24.
