Your Annual Exam

An annual exam is a yearly preventive visit with your doctor to check your physical and mental health. It is important for your wellness and peace of mind. Your Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico health plan may cover preventive services like your annual exam when you have an appointment with an in-network doctor.

Also, depending on your health plan and provider, you may be able to meet with your doctor virtually.

What Happens During Your Exam?

This visit is your opportunity to address health concerns. You and your doctor can plan ahead, set health goals and keep track of your progress.

Your doctor will listen to your heart and lungs. They may also:

  • Give you preventive screenings for things like blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar
  • Ask about lifestyle habits like smoking, drinking, sexual health, diet and exercise
  • Review your vaccination status and update your personal and family medical history

Preventive or Office Visit Services

You might wonder how preventive services and office visit services are different.

A preventive visit or service helps prevent or find problems before you feel sick.

An office visit or service most often treats new issues or existing health problems.

Building a Relationship With Your Doctor

Don’t wait until you’re sick to get to know your doctor.

Take some time to find a doctor in your BCBSNM health plan’s network. You can use our Provider Finder® to search by specialty, zip code and gender.

Once you have a list of doctors, do some research online or call their office before scheduling your annual exam.

Here are some questions you can ask:

  • Do they take your health plan?
  • Are they taking new patients?
  • How long does it take to get an appointment?
  • What are their office hours?
  • What are their telehealth offerings?
  • Do they offer COVID-19 safety precautions?

Visiting Your Doctor

Whether you meet with your doctor in the office or virtually, here are a few things you can have ready for your annual physical exam:

  • Your member ID card
  • List of prescription drugs
  • Questions or concerns for your visit
  • Family medical history
  • Any updates to your health or major life changes
