ALBUQUERQUE — Rebuilding Together Sandoval County (RTSC) announced it received a $25,000 grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico’s (BCBSNM) Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® initiative. The grant will support RTSC’s Safe and Healthy Homes program, which provides essential home repairs at no-cost for low-income families.
“We believe it is a fundamental right for everyone to live in a safe and healthy home,” said Bradley Wood, board president of Rebuilding Together Sandoval County. “Our work with BCBSNM fills a critical need in New Mexico where many families are struggling to keep their homes and can’t afford urgent repairs, like leaking roofs or broken furnaces. We are excited to start this new partnership with BCBSNM to improve the living conditions of New Mexico families in need.”
RTSC will support the mission of BCBSNM’s Healthy Kids, Healthy Families initiative by completing critical home repairs for low-income homeowners in Sandoval County. Funds will be used to correct significant housing deficiencies, eliminate safety hazards and create a healthier environment in the home. With the awarded funding, RTSC expects to serve at least 10 families, focusing on families with children. These families will be better positioned to find employment, achieve economic mobility and maintain improved health.
“We’re especially proud to support programs that address housing issues in the communities we serve,” said Janice Torrez, BCBSNM president. “A family’s health can depend on the quality of their living conditions. RTSC’s program is making a direct impact on the lives of New Mexicans by helping them maintain their homes and reducing the negative effects that housing deficiencies can have on families’ well-being.”
BCBSNM’s Healthy Kids, Healthy Families grant initiative is part of an ongoing commitment to invest in and partner with nonprofit organizations that offer sustainable, measurable programs in nutrition, physical activity, disease prevention and management, and supporting safe environments. RTSC’s commitment to providing safe, sound and healthy homes aligns with the vision of Healthy Kids, Healthy Families to improve the health of children and their families across New Mexico.
